Dear Subscriber First Name,At this time of year, I’m always struck by how kind it was of God to arrange things so that when the clocks go back and the nights grow longer, we’re compensated with an extra hour in bed. Likewise, in spring, it feels easy to pay the price of losing an hour when we’re rewarded with longer, sunnier days. Then, of course, I remind myself that a) I don’t actually believe in God, and b) the changing of the clocks isn’t even a natural phenomenon—let alone a divine one—but a manmade decision. Which rather takes the magic out of it. Sometimes I rebel by deciding for myself when the clocks should change, something that was much easier before our phones and computers started doing it automatically. But not the kitchen clock. The kitchen clock never gets changed on time. For at least a week, I get to say things like, “It’s actually 7 a.m. in real time,” or, “Well, in actual time it’s already 5 p.m (wine o’clock!).” As the clocks change and the days grow darker, it’s natural to feel a sense of loss. But long evenings and fewer social commitments can mean more time for creativity—if we choose to commit to it.
