Meditation for Artists

AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION CREATED ESPECIALLY FOR ARTISTS

 Cristian Newman

Cristian Newman

Probably for the first time ever, a meditation course specifically for painters, photographers, dancers, writers, musicians and uncategorisable creative people everywhere!

“The way I see it, meditators and artists are often on a similar mission. The mission to get close to reality. The mission to have an experience that is, somehow, ‘truer’. The artist takes it a step further in wanting to communicate that experience.

The meditations taught on this course are from the Buddhist tradition, and the Buddha was someone who was phenomenally good at communicating the truth he found! Having said that you don’t have to be a Buddhist to find these teachings helpful, they are very much concerned with universal truths.”

MEDITATION CAN BE A SUPPORT TO ARTISTS IN A NUMBER OF WAYS

Getting comfortable in the space of ‘nothing happening’ where all sorts of creative urges and ideas can emerge.

Learning how to release blocked energy in the body, and releasing a sense of stuckness in the mind.

Learning how to see things differently, understanding what perception is, and exploring how true it is.

Finding ways to open the heart, empathise, and therefore closing the gap between self and other.

Art and dharma are both ways of coming to terms with our own suffering.
— STEPHEN BATCHELOR

WK 1 - Awareness

We can develop confidence through meditation. The confidence to be unashamedly ourselves. A basic understanding of karma shows us how to accept what is, to let go of any blocked energy, and to continually move forward.
Meditation – grounding on the earth and body awareness.

WK 2 - EMPATHY

We live in a time of extreme polarisation, where the differences between us are continually being highlighted. But the reality is that we have so much in common. The basis of our common humanity becomes the foundation for developing empathy and loving kindness.
Meditation – loving kindness and empathy.

WK 3  - DIRECT EXPERIENCE

All experience is a composition, we are literally creating our lives from the raw elements of our experience. Meditation can help us to distinguish the direct raw materials, from the stories we weave and the pictures we create, giving us the opportunity to create something new.
Meditation – awareness of direct experience, using the breath

WK 4 - COMPASSION

As Stephen Batchelor says, “Art and dharma are both ways of coming to terms with our own suffering.” They can both also be  ways of responding to suffering in the world. Love has to start at home, with whatever is arising in this moment, the pleasant and the unpleasant. From there we can start to turn towards the world.
Meditation – loving kindness with compassion

WK 5 - STILLNESS

In meditation, as in art, there is a time and space of waiting. Of nothing happening. Of surrender. Of being an open channel. From that space everything can happen, all on it's own, just as it always has.
Meditation – just sitting and pure awareness

Each evening there will be -

An introduction to the theme.
Two periods of led meditation.
Time for questions and discussion

You will also have access to online materials and audio recordings for each meditation to help you practice at home and the opportunity to have two one-to-one meditation talks on Skype.
