Dharma Geeks: Dharma Bums - the poetry of Kerouac and the Beat Generation
“We’ve been waiting for you
Since Morning, Jack
Why were you so long
Dallying in the sooty room?
This transcendental Brilliance
Is the better part
(of Nothingness
I sing)”
Dharma Geeks is a morning of creative practice — qigong, meditation, dharma, and dialogue. It's for people who get a kick out of exploring Dharma teachings and want to bring them to life in the everyday.
The starting point for this Dharma Geeks session is a dog-eared copy of Pomes All Sizes by Jack Kerouac, with its introduction by Allen Ginsberg—a book I’ve been carrying around since the early 90s. Kerouac’s poems opened a doorway into another world, one where art and Buddhism collide. Through the poetry and music of the Dharma Bums, we’ll explore their messy yet intense and creative approach to practice—and experiment with bringing some of that same spontaneity into our own meditation.
All times are GMT (UK Time)
Introduction, led Qigong (10:00–10:30)
Dhammasiri opens the morning with a 20-minute qigong session — no experience needed, complete beginners welcome.
Dharma talk and reflections (10:30–11:00)
A short talk exploring the theme through my own personal reflections, with questions for you to ponder.
Led meditation (11.00-11.30)
A creative guided meditation, woven through with the same theme.
Creative conversation (11.30-12 noon)
Stay for an open conversation, or slip away after the meditation to sit with your own reflections. Both are welcome.
In case you can’t make it on the day part one of the session will be recorded. After the event I'll send out a video and audio recording as well as any quotes or links from the session.
