The aesthetics of work

I’ll make my coffee in a few minutes. It’s 9.22 and I’ve been writing since 7.30. I’m following a schedule and it includes coffee. It’s okay not to stick to it. I can just change it. But I love the clarity.

When I finish writing these few lines and before I put the kettle on, I’ll take a quick look at what I’m doing next. If it’s working on a new page for my website, I’ll open that up, get my notes out, then enjoy my coffee. While in the background, my subconscious can work away on the next project.

I love the aesthetics of work, even desk work.

It's even better with manual work. Clearing the table for baking bread, the leather apron, sprinkling flour onto the board, 50 gms of butter by eye on the scale turns out to be 53 gms. Not bad.

When I tune into the aesthetics of work, I notice my breathing change. Deeper. Slower. Louder. For many of us work makes up a large part of our day, paid work and the work of being alive. If our work is our practice, then we really are living a life of practice.

I’m going to be exploring ‘work as practice’ more in the Wabi-sabi Workplace.
